The group tomb was found in the desert in Southeast Libya – at the same time, 76 immigrants were released “by forced detention”
Libya security authorities have withdrawn at least 28 bodies of immigrants from a group grave found in the desert in Southeast Libya, the Attorney General said today.
The corpses were found north of the city of Koufou, the Attorney General said with a post on Facebook, while 76 immigrants were released “by forced detention”. The buzz is about 1,712 kilometers from the capital Tripoli.
“Members of a gang captured irregular immigrants, tortured them and submitted them to harsh, humiliating and inhumane treatment,” he said, noting that forensic investigations have begun to find the “cause of death” of immigrants. Authorities have begun to substantiate the testimonies of survivors and have arrested three suspects: one Libyan national and two foreigners, the prosecutor added.
On Thursday, the Aluachat Security Directorate and the Libyan Red Crescent announced that at least 29 corpses of immigrants were recovered in two locations in southeast and western Libya. Aluhahat said 19 corpses were found in group graves in a farm in the Jihara area, some 440 kilometers from Benghazi, the second largest city in Libya. Deaths are believed to have been linked to the movement of people. The Libyan Red Crescent reported that its volunteers were pulled over by the corpses of 10 immigrants, as the sailboat on which they had boarded the offshore of Dila port, Zawiya, about 40 kilometers from Tripoli.
Libya, who sank into chaos after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, has turned into a hub of irregular migration to Europe via the Mediterranean.
