The dream of the far -right Herbert Kickl to become the “Chancellor of the People” of Austria was canceled, at least for the time being. On Wednesday, the Leader of the Freelancers (FPö) returned the order to form a government to Austrian Republic President Alexander Van Der Belen. Negotiations with the Conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) were wrecked, despite the initial optimism created by the rapid agreement of the two sides on the budget.

In recent days it has been shown that the process had been blocked. The reason for the distribution of ministries, with that of the interior, responsible for immigration and asylum issues, but also overall the attitude towards the EU. It is characteristic that Kikl in order to justify the disagreement emphasized that “Austria cannot be considered a branch of Brussels. “

The… scared of both

The bottom line is that despite the initial approach, second thoughts seemed to prevail. The FPö saw since it entered the negotiations its rates starting to gradually fall and at some point it had 35% (in the September elections it had 28.8%). He now prefers the choice of new elections, hoping he will find himself in an even better position, betting on his “disobedience” and raising the flag of anti -Europeanism.

Conservatives of the People’s Party considered that there was some condition in the demands of their interlocutors who seemed to want to “kneel” them. Obviously they have also been alarmed by the reactions caused by the parliamentary co -operation of their “sister” Christian Democratic Union with the far -right alternative to Germany and eventually decided to go back, even if they are afraid of further fall in new elections.

Exercise of multiple solutions?

The initiative is now owned by Van Der Belen. The President of the Republic emphasized that the Constitution has the necessary forecasts to avoid political instability and began meetings with party leaders.

He even mentioned three more possible scenarios, besides the obvious of the new elections. The establishment of an expert government or a minority government, but also the possibility of some parties will reach an agreement on another coalition, no matter how difficult it seems difficult at this stage. It is recalled that before these negotiations they had also reached a dead end between Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and the Liberal Neos Party.

Every other than stability

It is a question, therefore, whether one can talk about stability, since all four scenarios have their … blurry sides. Early elections are not expected to bring big shifts and they will certainly not give an autonomous majority to anyone.

A coalition of “need” parties is doubtful whether it will be long, and so does a government or minority government. Austria continues to move to the limit of a severe political crisis, which is not irrelevant to the poor fiscal situation, but also the discomfort that has a large part of society for the political system as a whole.
