A recent poll conducted by the Japanese newspaper The Yomiuri Shimbun found that 72% of respondents “believe” that the government had to adopt laws to prevent the dissemination of misinformation on social networking sites.

By comparison, 24% said that they “do not believe” that it needed it.

The greater the age of respondents, the higher the percentage of those who “believe” that the introduction of such laws is necessary: 83% of people aged 60 and older, 71% of people aged 40-59 and 55% of people 18-39 years old believe that such law is needed.

The influence of information posted on social media with questionable validity on the election results has become an issue, as embodied in last year’s elections for the position of Chio’s governor. The ruling parties and the opposition are making further consultations on potential legal restrictions that can be imposed.
