Far from today’s Riyadh talks between the US and Russia, the Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to talk to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelenski, “if needed”.

According to the same statements, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov questioned the legitimacy of Zelenski’s presidency – An attitude that Putin himself has repeatedly emphasized.

It is noted that Zelenski was elected president of Ukraine in 2019 for a five -year term.

His term expired in May 2024. But Ukrainian officials say that the ongoing Russian invasion and military law in Ukraine make it virtually impossible to conduct presidential elections.

Ukraine’s law on military law prohibits presidential, parliamentary and local elections.

That is why Zelenski remained in power while Russia claims that his term has expired.

In Ukraine, however, calls for presidential elections are rare, and even Zelenski’s main opponents say it would be difficult to organize and that they might be manipulated by Russia.

Today the Zelenski – Erdogan meeting

As Ukraine is not involved in talks between the US and Russia in Saudi Arabia today, Zelenski is in the Turkish capital, Ankara. It is his third visit to the country after the Russian invasion of Ukraine almost three years ago.

At 15:00 Greece (16:00 local time) will meet Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He will also attend a ceremony for the inauguration of a Ukrainian embassy building, along with his wife, Oleni Zelenska.
