War in Ukraine: Mariupol in Russian “vise” – Battles in the city center

by

Fighting is reported in the center of the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol, according to reports.

In particular, the mayor of Mariupol, Vadim Bichenko, confirmed to the BBC that there is indeed a great deal of mobility.

“Fighting with tanks and machine guns continues. Everyone is hiding in warehouses. More than 80% of the residential buildings in Mariupol have either been severely damaged or have been completely destroyed.”

The mayor even added that 30% of the buildings can not be restored.

“There is no city center left. There is not a small piece of land in the city that has no signs of war,” he said.

A total of 9,145 civilians were evacuated today, via humanitarian corridors, from Ukrainian cities under siege or bombing, authorities said.

Kirill Tymoshenko, a senior member of the Ukrainian presidency, said in a post on the Internet that out of 9,145, 4,972 had left Mariupol.

According to Ukrainian authorities, 130 people have been released from the theater-shelter that was bombed, with the rescue operation continuing.

The Russian blockade is “tightening” in Ukraine as anti-aircraft fire and missiles were fired earlier in Odessa while an armored army tank made its first appearance on a road in the area.

The fire was aimed at unknown targets over the city and it is still unknown whether there is a target collapse.

The shooting lasted a long time and it is noted that there was no warning siren.

Two new explosions and sirens were heard in parallel in Kyiv tonight, with reports that they were rockets fired as the Kiev air defenses were operating.

According to the same information, there are two main lines of defense of the capital in Irpin, where the Russian forces are at 20 km and in Brovari where they have retreated to 70 km.
