An alarm has been sounded in the city of Mannheim, West Germany, as a vehicle fell on a crowd of people at high speed.

Police spokesman confirmed that one person has been killed and there are many seriously injured– about 25 reports so far – while the driver of the vehicle, which according to Bild is a black SUV, has been arrested. It is not clear if there is another offender.

Many people are fallen on the ground, according to a statement of an eyewitness at the Reuters news agency.

Authorities call on people to avoid the area as the business is ongoing.

It is not clear for the time being whether it is an accident or deliberate, terrorist act.

According to the Guardian, the incident occurred during the popular carnival period in Germany.

A local carnival market in Mannheim opened last Thursday and a parade took place yesterday. Another traditional carnival event on the street was scheduled for Tuesday, Welt said.

Local media reports a strong police presence on the spot and a police helicopter operating by air.

German police remained alert for this year’s carnival parades, after social media accounts linked to the Islamic State’s militant organization called for attacks.

Although it has not been confirmed that the incident was deliberate, these first reports are causing alarm after recent attacks with vehicles falling on foot in recent months.

In February, a man fell car on a group of protesters in Munich, killing two people.

In December, six people were killed in Magdeburg when a man fell by car to crowds in a Christmas market.
