The “seizure” of the Russian assets submitted to the European Union would be “opposed to international agreements” concluded by France and Europe, the French minister said
The French government today disagreed with the idea of seizing the reserved Russian assets to finance Ukrainian defense, which supported the ruling party and socialist leaders, as well as part of the Right and Ecologists.
The “seizure” of Russian assets submitted to the European Union would be “opposed to international agreements” entered into by France and Europe, French Finance Minister Eric Lobar warned today. “France’s position is that these Russian assets belong specifically to the Russian Central Bank.”
EU countries are already using the benefits of almost 235 billion euros of frozen assets to help Ukraine equipment and finance it after the war, a wealth of 2.5 to 3 billion euros a year. On the contrary, the choice of seizure has been ruled out so far by the EU, mainly for reasons of legal order.
The seizure of these assets can create “an economic precedent” and make investors skeptical, the French Minister of European Affairs Benzamed Adad underlined today, even if this “is part of the levers we can really look”.
A government position that former Prime Minister Gabriel Atal does not approve: “We are many who no longer share the government’s position on the seizure of Russian assets,” he said today. “The data changed,” he said. “And before we charge the French and Europeans, let’s charge the Russians to Ukraine’s security,” he added.
In the face of the government, a coalition of supporters of the seizure had gathered yesterday, Monday, during a discussion in the semicircle, several political parties, including the Socialists, the Ecologists and a group of the independent left.
Boris Valo, head of the Socialist MPs, therefore called for the seizure of the “200 billion” that have been frozen in European banks. This morning, former Prime Minister Eduardo Philippe said that we should now “go to a higher stage” with Russia and that the committed assets were “fully available” to the Ukrainian war effort.
Ecologists were also in favor of seizure. “We saw a road to confirm a vast majority of the semicircle for a very strong support for Ukraine, political support, military, financial,” said the team’s spokesman, Lea Balaz El Mariki, yesterday.
This issue, however, divides the left. The disobedient France (LFI/ Radical Left) reiterated today’s opposition: “The disobedient France has only one compass, this is international law,” Bastian Laso said today. That is, “international law prohibits the seizure of these assets”.
As for the far -right national alarm (RN), without clearly opposing this seizure, Marin Lepen’s leader called on Monday a report to “finally understand what (…) the interests of the binded Russian assets, which I have, which I have a lot of funding.”
On Monday, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Baro had already justified the position of the government: “The mobilization of revenue derived from Russian assets that have been stopped in Europe and elsewhere is a loan of 45 billion euros granted to Ukraine, Therefore no euro to European taxpayers “.
