In January 2025, nearly 4.3 million Ukrainian who escaped from their country, as a consequence of the Russian aggressive war against Ukraine, have received a temporary protection status in the EU, according to Eurostat data released today.

EU countries that host the largest number of beneficiaries of interim protection from Ukraine are Germany (1.17 million, 27.3%of the total EU), Poland (993,015, 23.2%) and the Czech Republic (394,985, 9.2%).

Compared to the population of each EU country, the highest proportion of temporary protection beneficiaries per thousand people were recorded in the Czech Republic (36.2), Poland (27.1) and Estonia (26.0), while the corresponding EU level was 9.5 per thousand.

On January 31, 2025, Ukrainian citizens represented over the 98.4% of EU Temporary Protection Beneficiaries. Adult women were almost half of the beneficiaries (44.8%). Children corresponded to almost a third (31.8%), while adult men were less than a quarter (23.4%) of the total.

Compared to the end of December 2024, the total number of people under temporary protection in the EU at the end of January increased by 25,530 (+0.6%).

It is recalled that on March 4, 2022, the EU Council noted the existence of a massive influx of displaced by Ukraine due to the Russian aggressive war and activated the provisional protection regime.

On June 25, 2024, the European Council decided to extend the temporary protection of these people from March 4, 2025 to March 4, 2026.
