Russia’s attack on Ukraine, particularly in schools and hospitals, has put some six million children at great risk, warns the non-governmental organization Save the Children today.
Roughly one in five children has been forced to flee the country to escape the war, and those who remain in war zones lack food, clean drinking water and medical care, while fearing for their lives, the NGO said.
According to data collected by Save the Children, 489 schools and 43 hospitals have been damaged or completely destroyed so far during the armed conflict.
“Schools should be safe places for children, not places where they are scared, injured or killed,” said Pete Walsh, director of the NGO branch in the country.
At least 59 children have been killed in the war, according to the UN. But according to media reports, the real number is probably already in the three digits.
“The rules of war are clear,” Walsh said. “Children are not the target – neither hospitals nor schools. We must protect the children of Ukraine at all costs. “How many more people need to die before this war is over?”
