Finnish court today sentenced a Russian to life imprisonment for war crimes in 2014 in eastern Ukraine, where it was found that his paramilitary organization had killed an injured soldier.

His trial Jan Petrovskialso known as Vojoslav Torden, is one of the few cases that foreign prosecutors deal with war crimes related to the action of forces of pro -Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, long before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 202.

Ukraine General Prosecutor’s Office today welcomed this development. “This case marks an important step in the fight against impunity of those who have committed serious violations of international humanitarian law,” The prosecution said in a statement.

Petrovsky, born in 1987, was found guilty of four by the five Categories against him, related to his activities in the province Luhansk of eastern Ukraine, part of the Donbas Region.

Petrovski was a member of Rusich, a paramilitary group that was attached to the Russian mercenaries organization Wagneraccording to the court. The European Union and the US have been imposed by 2022.

The court found him guilty, among other things, of the assassination of the group of one injured Ukrainian soldier, the amputation of another, and the reception and publication of degrading photos by dead soldiers.

Petrovsky was arrested in Finland at Ukraine’s request in 2023 as he tried to travel to the France with fake identity. The Finland Supreme Court then blocked its extradition to Ukraine.

The court dismissed a charge, judging that it is not proven that the Rusich unit of Petrovsky had designed and had ambushedwhere members of the unit pretended to be Ukrainians and where 22 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, although he found that Rusich fighters were present.

Petrovsky denies all the categories and will filed an appealsaid his lawyer.
