The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security expressed his satisfaction with the adoption of the strategic compass by the EU Council of Foreign and Defense Ministers today. Josep Borrellunderlining that this is a “strong message of EU unity”.
“Russia’s aggressive war is a tectonic shift in European history,” Borrell said, adding that everyone was now convinced that Europe was in danger from a neighbor determined to go to war. The “Strategic Compass” includes clear timetables for strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities and filling “defense gaps” in the coming years, Borrell said, adding that the EU’s average defense spending should be significantly increased by the current 1.5% of GDP.
Regarding the Russian invasion in Ukraine“The EU is ready to take further sanctions against Russia, in coordination with its international partners,” Borrell said, adding that they would not be formally adopted within a week, Summit meeting.
Finally, the Josep Borrell reported that in Council of EU there was a political agreement for additional arms assistance to Ukraineamounting to EUR 500 million.
