At a “historic turning point”, they seek to strengthen their cooperation on security and financial matters as the uncertainty internationally escalates
The leaders of Japan, China and South Korean diplomacy met today in Tokyo, looking for common ground for security in East Asia and economic issues as the uncertainty is escalating internationally.
“Given the ever-increasingly serious situation internationally, I believe that we can really be at a turning point in history,” Japanese Foreign Minister Tacci Iuya said at the start of the Tokyo meeting with their counterparts by China Wang Yi.
The three ministers agreed to accelerate preparations for a tripartite summit in Japan, which would also include discussions on how Tokyo, Beijing and Seoul can face birth reduction and aging population, Juya said in a joint statement.
The meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the three countries, the first in 2023, is held while US President Donald Trump overturns decades of alliances, possibly paving the way for China to create closer relations with countries traditionally contracting with Washington.
“Our three countries have a joint population of about 1.6 billion people and GDP exceeding 24 trillion. dollars. With our huge markets and great potential, we can have a significant influence, “Wang commented.
Three countries’ foreign ministers agreed today to strengthen their cooperation, the leader of Japanese diplomacy said. “We had a sincere exchange of opinions on trilateral cooperation and regional and international issues in a broader light, and we confirmed that we would promote a future -oriented cooperation,” Juaya told reporters after a trilateral meeting in Tokyo.
The three ministers agreed that Peace on the Korean Peninsula is a common “responsibility,” said South Korean diplomat chief tae-youl.
“We have reaffirmed that maintaining peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula is a common interest and a responsibility shared by the three countries,” TSO told reporters after the conversations.
However, the deep differences remain. Beijing disagrees with Tokyo and Seoul on various important issues, such as its support in North Korea, the escalation of its military activity around Taiwan and support for Russia in its war with Ukraine.
Japan and South Korea, US allied countries that host thousands of US troops on the territory, share Washington’s view that China – the world’s second largest economy – poses increasing risk in regional security.
TSO said he asked China during the meeting to help persuade North Korea to abandon her nuclear weapons.
“I also emphasized that illegal military co -operation between Russia and North Korea should stop immediately and that North Korea should not be rewarded for its mistakes on the way to ending the war in Ukraine,” he added.
The Japanese Foreign Minister also stressed before his two bonds that there would be no “now” accepted change of status by force, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“As for the situation in Ukraine, I emphasized the need for the international community to rally to reiterate that any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo by force will not be tolerated anywhere in the world,” Taksi Iuya told reporters after the talks in Tokyo.
