The Turkish authorities arrested 343 people during the overnight demonstrations held in many Turkish cities in response to the arrest of Constantinople Mayor Eremm Imoglou, the interior ministry said on Saturday.

Demonstrations were held in more than ten cities, including Constantinople and the capital Ankara, according to the Turkish ministry.

As he notes, the arrests were made to avoid the “disturbance of the public order” and warned that the authorities would not tolerate “chaos and challenge”.

Tens of thousands of Turks have been on the streets daily since Wednesday, when Imamoglu was arrested accused of bribery and aid to a terrorist group.

The Republican People’s Party (CHP) to which the Mayor of Constantinople belongs to, condemned the movement as politically motivated and urged its supporters to legally protest.
