Kennedy plans to dismiss 10,000 employees and, along with other departures through voluntary exit programs, the ministry will employ 62,000 employees of 82,000
US Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy Junior, announced sweeping cuts in his ministry on Thursday as part of the last Trump government’s effort to drastically reduce the magnitude of the federal state mechanism and its responsibilities.
According to a ministry statement, Kennedy plans to dismiss 10,000 employees. Along with other departures through voluntary exit programs, the reductions mean that the ministry will employ 62,000 employees of 82,000.
Kennedy also intends to rationalize the structure of the ministry, merging his 28 services to 15 and reducing the regional offices from 10 to 5.
The ministry will create a new administration for a “healthy America”, while claiming that changes will reduce costs by $ 1.8 billion a year.
“We are remodeling the organization to align with its central mission and our new priorities in tackling the epidemic of chronic diseases,” Kennedy said. “This ministry will do more – much more – at a lower cost for taxpayers.”
Wall Street Journal was the first to mention Kennedy’s plans.
Kennedy, known for his skepticism towards his vaccines and non -conventional positions on public health, has pledged to remodel the ministry and federal health policies, promoting his agenda “We make America healthy again”.
In the context of its responsibilities, it controls organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC Centers (CDC), with influence on the approval of new drugs, vaccination recommendations and public health guidance. The Ministry of Health manages about a quarter of the federal budget, mainly through the health insurance programs for the elderly and low -income people.
The cuts are expected to spark strong reactions from Democrats and Public Health supporters, who are already concerned about the extent of Trump’s cuts, led by US President and Billionaire Counselor Ilon Musk.
Critics warn that cuts in federal health programs may affect food safety, vaccine development and approval of medical treatments.
