The US president will attend NATO’s next meeting, while US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio is in Brussels yesterday.
Donald Trump will be present at the NATO Summit in The Hague in June (from June 24th to June 26th), as Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski told reporters on the sidelines of the Atlantic Alliance. The US president will personally attend the next NATO meeting, while the US Foreign Minister, Marco Rubio, is in Brussels yesterday.
“Donald Trump remains ‘committed’ to Article 5 of the NATO founding treaty on collective defense and will be present at the Atlantic Alliance Summit in The Hague in June,” the Polish Foreign Minister said.
On March 13 (central light), NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with the US president at the White House, aiming to persuade him not to retire from the North Atlantic Alliance.
From Brussels, Rubio stressed yesterday that his country would “remain” in NATO and repeated the US request by all European NATO countries and Canada to drastically increase their military spending, dedicating at least 5% of their GDP to this purpose.
The US Secretary of State said the goal of the US is to make the alliance stronger and more viable and that the allies should have more potential.
“It is a set of not only partners and allies, but also advanced economies, rich countries that have the ability to make more. We understand that this is a compromise. We have to do it every year in our country. I assure you that we also have domestic needs. But, we have prioritized defense because of the role we have played in the world. And we want our partners to do the same, “he said.
Finally, he said that due to the events of recent years, and in particular the war “in the heart of Europe”, it is a reminder that “harsh power is still necessary as a deterrent”.
As he said, at the end of the session there is an understanding that “we are on a realistic path so that each of the members is bound and fulfilling the promise to reach up to 5% of the expenditure” and added that it includes the United States, which should increase their rate.
