Paris calls on the EU to prepare a strong reaction, considering it to be the best way to gain advantage in negotiations
Harsh answer and use of all the tools available to European Union France proposes in the context of the countermeasure debate on Donald Trump’s duties.
European Union countries have agreed that all available tools can be used as countermeasures in US negotiations on President Donald Trump’s duties, according to the French Minister of Commerce Loren Saint-Marten.
Paris calls on the EU to prepare a strong reaction, considering it to be the best way to gain an advantage in the negotiations. Prior to the meeting of the heads of trade in Luxembourg on Monday, Saint-Marten called on the block to use his entire “toolbox”, which, he said, could give an “extremely aggressive” answer.
“We were some countries that we say everything is possible, we have a wide toolbox and everything is possible,” Saint-Marten told Bloomberg after the meeting was over. “We do not want to use it, but we can use it, and this has been wider consensus.”
French ministers have stated that the EU should not only be limited to tariffs on goods, but also target the services and activities of US technology companies. France has also pressed the EU to use the anti -forced policy tool. This tool, developed as a deterrent against forced financial practices, allows options such as limited operation of services by a commercial partner, but will take time to apply.
German Finance Minister Robert Habek said earlier on Monday that the EU should “carefully consider” the use of this tool.
Saint-Marten did not comment on specific tools, but added that everything is on the table.
“We do not want to escalate, we want to end this trade war, so we have to negotiate with the US,” he said. “At the same time, if we want to do it from a position of power, we must explain to the US that we have a counterattack tools.”
