China today opposed Russia’s exclusion from the next G20 summitsomething the US is considering after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“Russia is an important member (of the G20), no member has the right to exclude another country,” Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told reporters.
China has avoided condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. For their part, the West is preparing to adopt new sanctions against Moscow at the NATO, EU and G7 summits to be held tomorrow, Thursday, in Brussels.
Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Adviser, spoke on Tuesday about the possible exclusion of Russian President Vladimir Putin from the G20, the next meeting of which is scheduled for the end of the year in Indonesia.
“On the issue of the G20, I would just say this: we believe that Russia can not act as if nothing is happening in the international institutions and towards the international community,” Sullivan said.
“But with regard to specific institutions and specific decisions, we want to consult with our allies before taking a decision,” he added.

In fact, yesterday, the Poland suggested to US officials to replace Russia in the “group” and allegedly received a “positive response”.
The G20 is one group of the world’s largest economies aimed at coordinating action on issues affecting the global economy, including climate change and growth.
Such a move could add to existing economic sanctions against Russia by the West. However, other key G20 nations are likely to veto – including China, India and Saudi Arabia, analysts say.
