In early May, Mertz will fulfill his biggest personal dream. What Merkel deprived him of: to swear Chancellor. Data does not foreshadow a prosperous future
Rarely post -election climate in a party that has defeated the elections is so restrained, if not heavy. This was already evident from the election night at the Konrad Adenauer Hausthe seat of the Christian Democrats, where the climate was anything but festive. The Christian Democrats scored, but without catching around 30%, which had set a target. They received 28.5%.
They knew they had no easy choices in front of them: promises they knew de facto that they would not be able to be implemented, such as the commitment to budgetary discipline in his standard Wolfgang Schoeble (Friedrich Mertz’s political mentor). The “debt” was over before the new government was even formed, with German -speaking parliamentary procedures.
They also knew that they would have to work with partners, such as the Social Democrats, who had previously criticized fundamental disagreements on principles and choices. They also knew that they would find themselves before a new, unpredictable, hectic international situation: the world of Donald Trump. They also knew that against them in the German Parliament they would have a strong far -right opposition, the Alternative for Germany, which received in the February elections, the best percentage he had ever received: 20.8%.
But they had not calculated that so quickly, just a few weeks after the election, polls would give a “draw”: 24% Christian Union (CDU/CSU), 24% alternative to Germany.
Last Wednesday, a Christian Union and Social Democrats, they announced that they had agreed to form a coalition government. Friedrich Mertz New Chancellor will be sworn in, there will be an in early May, fulfilling his most important personal dream: what had once deprived him of John Merkel.
The agreement to form a coalition government presented by the Christian Union with the Social Democrats has three main goals. First, to boost Germany’s recovery, the economy, the infrastructure, the digitization so that the country becomes attractive to investment and competitive in China. Secondly, to make Germany ready for the Russian threat, which for Berlin is an existential nature.
In all of this, the challenge of managing the immigration is added. The course chosen by the Christian Union has been prescribed by the far -right agenda: closed borders, deportations, a Germany that will not welcome foreigners but will accept them under strict conditions.
The day that AfD comes first in polls
For all the above reasons, the previous three -party government failed under the Social Democrat Odf Saltz. For all the above reasons, the alternative to Germany, which proposes the return to nuclear energy as a key to recovery, claiming to have close contact with Moscow, Beijing and the hard core of Trump’s rule, which in the field of immigration advertises that it has its “authentic” program.
Mertz has managed after many decades to fulfill his unique political goal: to swear Chancellor. The big bet is not to become the “fatal chancellor” of modern Germany. The far -right is no longer a threat is an official opposition with expanded jurisdictions in the German Parliament and it is not excluded that the day will come first in a poll. The bet will then be lost for Friedrich Mertz.
