Two members of the US Congress landed in Damascus on Friday to meet with Syrian officials, on the first visit of US officials to the war -destroyed country since Bashar al -Assad was expelled from power by a rebel attack.

These are Florida Cory Mills representatives, who is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committees and Armed Forces of the House of Representatives, and Marlin Stutzman from Indiana. Both are members of President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.

Mills met with the new Syrian President Ahmed al-Sarah on Friday night, a delegation source said according to Reuters and discussed US sanctions and Iran during a 90-minute meeting.

The source said Stutzman was to meet with Sarah on Saturday, who is still under US and UN sanctions on his previous links with al -Qaeda.

Asked about meeting a leader still subject to Washington sanctions, Stutzman mentioned examples of Trump’s co -operation with Iran and North Korean leaders.

“We should not be afraid to talk to anyone,” he said and said he was looking forward to seeing how Syria will face foreign fighters and rule the diverse population of the country without exclusion.

The new Syrian leadership under the leadership of the Islamists pressured the US and Europe to completely lift sanctions so that the country could restart its economy decimated by the war that lasted more than a decade.

Mills and Stutzman toured parts of the capital destroyed by war, met with Christian religious leaders and planning to meet with other Syrian government ministers.
