The Maximos Palace notes that this support is still expressed on a humanitarian level with the reception of Ukrainian refugees in Greece (13,000 to date). At the same time, from the seat of the Alliance, the Prime Minister will reiterate the government’s unwavering support in international law, in defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, but also in its right to exercise self-defense against the Russian invasion.
These messages and the unity of the Alliance in the face of the Russian invasion and the new challenges it poses for the security of the Alliance and especially for the Eastern Wing of NATO, are expected to be repeated by the leaders of the NATO countries in the Joint Statement they will adopt during of the Summit.
Government sources point out that Thursday’s debate will also pose a key challenge for the Alliance’s defense in view of the overall debate on its strategic doctrine at the NATO Summit in Madrid next June.
Regarding the new conditions that are being formed for the European security architecture and therefore for NATO, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to emphasize the dimension of NATO-EU cooperation, as well as the importance of the European strategy of autonomy that is becoming more topical. than ever, as strengthening the European security pillar will complement the North Atlantic Alliance.
Developments in Ukraine and foreign policy and defense issues (implementation of the Compass Strategy) are expected to concern leaders today, the first day of the European Council.
The major energy issue is expected to be discussed tomorrow.
The meeting will be attended by US President Joe Biden, while the latest developments, the implementation of sanctions against Russia and further humanitarian and economic assistance to Ukraine are expected to be discussed in order to send a strong message of support to the 27.
On the issue of energy, the Prime Minister is expected to reiterate his proposals on the issue of revaluations, which requires a European solution in parallel with the measures taken at national level.
As for the issue of gradual detachment from Russian energy sources and security of energy supply, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, government sources emphasize, apparently supports the Commission’s proposal for joint storage and supply of gas.
