The 27 member states of the European Union gave the green light on Wednesday to offer military aid worth another 500 million euros to Ukraine, in view of the summit dedicated to the invasion of Russia in its neighboring country, at the invitation of the US President Joe Biden.
The EU will continue to support Ukraine As Russia continues to cause suffering “to the Ukrainian people,” European Union foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said in a statement.
A previous military aid package approved was worth another 500m euros. Sending weapons to an attacking non-EU member state is a historic first.
The decision, however, was not taken so smoothly, although Mr. Borel had announced it before the governments approved it.
European treaties do not allow the use of funds from the EU budget for military purposes. The first military aid package thus took the form of a mechanism funded separately by the Member States.
This amount does not include weapons given bilaterally.
At today’s EU summit, Biden will discuss with European heads of state and government developments in the war and the reaction of the West. It will be preceded by a NATO summit and a G7 summit in Brussels.
At his meeting NATO Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to address them later in the day.
