Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations told the British Sky News that his government reserves the right to use nuclear weapons “if provoked” by NATO.
Speaking shortly after a similar statement by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov to Christian Amanpour, Dmitry Polianski was asked if President Putin was right to shake the threat of a nuclear war over the world. “If Russia is provoked by NATO, if Russia is attacked by NATO, why not, we are a nuclear power,” was his response.
He added: “I do not think it is right to say that. But it is not right either to threaten Russia and try to intervene. Therefore when talking to one nuclear power“Of course you have to calculate all the possible outcomes of your behavior.”
The Russian diplomat also denied the accusation of committing war crimes in Ukraine. “I do not think they are committing war crimes in Ukraine. Of course, it is not up to me to judge. I’m not there. You are not there either. You watch the videos, you watch a lot of the videos that are considered fake news. “One thing is believed, I believe something else,” said Mr. Polianski.
The Sky News reporter showed him photos from leveled Mariupol which depicted destroyed apartment buildings and buried bodies of children, but he refused to accept that the responsibility lies with Russia.
Instead, he claimed that the Ukrainians were bombing their own buildings and civilians. “We have said from the beginning that our army is not a threat to the civilian population of Ukraine,” he added.
