The Ukrainian president also noted that he raised Trump the issue of air defense systems needed by Ukraine, and he replied that he would “consider it”
His brief meeting with Donald Trump in the Vatican, on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral, was the best he had ever had with the US president, said Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski, adding that during her Russia.
In comments released by the Ukrainian Presidency, Zelenski also said that he and the US president agreed that a 30 -day truce between Kiev and Moscow is the right step to end the war in Ukraine.
He also added that he raised the issue of sanctions on Trump and that the response he received from the US president was “very intense” without any details.
The Ukrainian president also said that the critical agreement on the minerals signed by the two countries on Wednesday is mutually beneficial and will allow Ukraine to defend future US investments, as well as its own territory and people.
The deal, which Trump has strongly promoted, will give the United States preferable access to new Ukraine mineral agreements and release US investments to rebuild Ukraine.
On the issue of security, Zelenski stressed that it is crucial for Kiev to enhance the effectiveness of the country’s air defense, which is one of Kiev’s main demands to his allies throughout the three -year full -time invasion of Russia.
“And so we are ready for the air defense systems to make a contribution (to the fund). I told him about the number (of the systems we need) – he told me they would work on it, (that) these things are not free. “
It is worth noting that the agreement on minerals between Washington and Kiev was reached at a time when the US is increasingly expressing their dissatisfaction with Moscow’s and Kiev’s failure to come to the table of peace talks.
Kiev says it supports an immediate unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days. Russian President Vladimir Putin said he agrees in principle, but that there are many issues that need to be clarified before proceeding to a ceasefire.
Responding to Moscow’s offer for a three -day ceasefire ahead of May 9, when Russia is celebrating its victory in World War II against Nazi Germany, Zelenski said he was ready to agree if the truce lasts 30 days.
He added that Ukraine, given the ongoing war with Russia, cannot guarantee the safety of a foreign official who will go to Moscow for the traditional May 9th parade.
“We cannot be responsible for what is happening in the territory of the Russian Federation. They are responsible for your safety and therefore we will not provide any guarantee, “he said.
