They were once considered one of the weakest players in Trump’s trajectory, now he has another strong position as a temporary national security adviser, in Walts’ position
Marco Rubio is doing great things under President Donald Trump – much more than almost anyone expected.
The Foreign Minister was once considered one of the weakest players in Trump’s orbit, a man who would not last long in the cabinet because he faced many internal opponents and had significant political differences with Trump and the base of Maga. But Rubio has skillfully won the President’s confidence, enough for Trump this week to give him another strong position as a temporary national security adviser, replacing the dismantled Mike Walts, Politco’s analysis.
Rubio’s assessment has increased in Trump’s eyes, after the former senator abandoned many of his previous political views, he strongly defended some of Trump’s toughest policies and worked well with others who have the attention of the president.
“He took over this position knowing exactly what he would do,” said Senator James Reese of Eidaho, Republican Chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee. “When you take up such a position, you are no longer a freelance professional such as when you are a senator in the United States … When you take up the position, you are committed to doing what your boss wants to happen, and he has a real ability to do that.”
Trump, who once mocked Rubio by calling “Little Mark”, now seems to see his former Florida senator as a correctioner who can face basic challenges, enough to give him four simultaneous jobs.
Speaking last Thursday in the wheel garden, Trump said: “When I have a problem, I call Mark. It solves it. “
However, his critics say that Rubio is upgrading a prominent position at high cost, abandoning policies he has long supported. Some argue that there has been nothing more than a Trump slave, with little power on his own.
“As soon as you let yourself trample on you, you lose respect, you lose your cryptocurrencies, you lose your future in Washington, and Rubio becomes an entrance mat,” said Adam Elvli, a former US ambassador to Bahraine in Bahraine.
Contrary, his supporters argue that Rubio is a skilled politician who has managed to reach high – including his term as Speaker of the House of Representatives of Florida at the age of only 35 and as a US senator with senior roles in the intelligence committees. This also includes the voters who brought Trump to power. As a result, its role has expanded. He is now Foreign Minister, Temporary National Security Adviser, USAID chief executive and United States.
When asked to comment, the Foreign Ministry made the following statement: “Minister Rubio feels honored for the confidence given and works daily to implement the president’s agenda.”
Rubio has made progress under Trump in part because he is not overly territorial, the report commented by analyzing the achievements he has achieved all this time, essentially trying to win the Maga base.
Rubio was once considered an aggressive Republican who supported everything, from strict sanctions to dictatorships to some US military interventions abroad. He insisted that the US had to support Ukraine as it resisted the Russian invasion and was an important voice that questioned China’s rise. But since he took office as a foreign minister, he has mitigated such positions – pressing Ukraine to reach a peace agreement with Russia and implying indifferently that the US must accept that the world is more multipolar in part because of its growing power.
As Rubio is expected to serve as a foreign minister and national security adviser for at least six months and possibly more, current and former state officials warned that it is difficult to do both jobs well.
Some wondered if this meant that both positions would be weakened. They also questioned how Rubio would balance the demands of travel as a foreign minister with the tendency of the National Security Counselor to remain on the side of the President while the National Security Council was supervised.
“It’s hard to be in two parts at the same time,” said a former senior diplomat. What remains is to prove whether he will do it in all roles.
