OR Ministerial conference of the UN in Berlin for peacekeeping operations was completed with the participation of more than 130 Member States and International Partners.
Overall more than a thousand participants – gathered to reaffirm their support for UN peacekeeping missions and to announce specific commitments aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and adaptability of missions within the changing global challenges.
This high -level meeting, hosted by the German government and lasted two days and was an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the support of the Member States to form the future of the UN peacekeeping missions.
The conference focused on “Future of peacekeeping operations“, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches to deal with complex conflicts, use new technologies and dealing with threats such as misinformation and falsification of information.
“In times of crisis around the world, blue -collars may mean the difference between life and death. Now more than ever, the world needs the United Nations. And the United Nations need peaceful missions fully equipped for today’s reality and challenges of tomorrow »said the UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres in its inaugural positioning.
“We welcome the political statements of the support of the Member States, as well as their commitments to providing military and police aid, new partnerships and technological support. This meeting is also more fundamental: the very future of peacekeeping ‘,’, Added Mr. Guterres.
“In an interconnected world, no state can safeguard the peace and security of its citizens alone. In the last two days, over 130 UN Member States have gathered in Berlin determined to progress together for this goal. We all agree that creating strong and effective peace missions is our common responsibility. We want to adjust future missions to the exact needs of host countries and increase their acceptance and effectiveness. This is the way forward to a world where peacekeeping is more important than ever, but also where the challenges are greater than ever. Participants stood at the height of the circumstances, submitting significant contributions. Germany’s support to the UN and its peacekeeping missions remains unmoved. While announcing the contribution of the country of 82m euros to the UN peacekeeping operations, the Minister of Defense of Germany, Germany’s Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, stated the following:
“I am grateful to all the partners who came to Berlin to make significant commitments, ensuring efficient global peacekeeping missions. Germany continues to be a stable supporter of UN peacekeeping operations and has committed 82m euros. In addition, we will continue our support for missions and partners through education and equipment. We focused on new and innovative commitments – from renewable energy technologies to medical drones and protection from improvised explosive mechanisms. We remain committed to the support of the three UN peacekeeping operations involving the German Armed Forces: South Sudan, Lebanon and Western Sahara. “
In total, 74 Member States made commitments, including:
Military and Police Units’ commitments:
53 Member States were committed to providing unit forces, including 88 military and police units, as well as critical capabilities, air transport, individual experts, staff and individual police.
Specialized Education:
59 Member States offered specialized training on issues such as civilian protection, gender equality and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.
Technological Developments and Database Approach:
18 Member States were committed to initiatives for the utilization of technology and data to improve the efficiency of the missions.
Women, Peace and Security:
38 Member States were committed to reinforcing the agenda “women, peace and security”, including balanced gender participation in missions.
Security and protection:
16 Member States have pledged actions and projects that enhance the security and protection of peacekeeping missions.
Behavior and accountability **:
11 Member States have pledged to enhance the accountability of peace missions and to support the fight against sexual exploitation and abuse. Actions include targeted contributions to the victim support fund.
Strategic Communication and Information Information:
8 Member States have pledged to strengthen UN strategic communications and help ensure information integrity.
More than 61,000 military and police officers are involved in UN missions from 119 countries, as well as over seven thousand civilian staff, serving 11 UN peacekeeping missions.
The Ministerial Conference in Berlin It is part of a series of high levels of meetings aimed at enhancing political support and securing tangible commitments to improve peacekeeping.
The conferences were preceded by Akkra (2023), Seoul (2021), New York (2019), Vancouver (2017) and London (2016).
