Voters in Romania are massively coming to the polls to elect the country’s next president, in a critical election that is expected to determine the country’s future march in Europe.

The dominant candidate, far -right George Simon, has already expressed doubts about the transparency of the process. At a press conference, he said he was concerned about any electoral fraud, arguing that there are 1.8 million registered voters who are dead. “I hope they do not resurrect and vote,” he said.

Tails of kilometers were formed on Sunday at the Romanian major city polls, such as Cluj in the north and Bucharest, as citizens are called upon to elect the country’s new president in a high -importance election for Romania in Europe.

By 2 pm (Local Time), 1.3 million more citizens had voted on compared to the same time in the first round of the election two weeks ago, according to official data.

The rise in the participation of young people aged 18-34, which increased by 32%, as well as the Romanians abroad, was impressive, further increasing participation in the second election.

The ballots are closed at 9 pm Local and time in Greece, when exit polls will be published. However, the end result may be delayed, especially if there is an objection to the validity of the procedure.

The showdown is considered decisive for the country of 19 million residents, located on the eastern border of the European Union.

Georgke Simon, a nationalist in Trump’s model, who wants to unite Romania with Moldova and has been banned from entering Ukraine, has been criticizing the EU and has committed to stop any help to Kiev.

His opponent, Nicusor Dan, an independent mayor of Bucharest with moderate profiles, promises to combat corruption, active involvement of Romania in European affairs and maintaining support for Ukraine.

Moderate candidate Nicusor Dan voted on Sunday in his hometown, Phagain and Transylvania, emphasizing the need to represent the “quiet, honest and hardworking people” who feel excluded from the political system.

“I voted for many people who are silent, honest and hardworking, and who for years have not felt they were represented. I voted for a change that would bring prosperity, not for one that brings adventures and discourages foreign investment, “he said.

Right -wing George Simon, for his part, voted in a small town outside Bucharest, accompanied by his political mentor, supranationalist and former presidency candidate Kalin Georgkescu.

Simon returned to the accusations of fraud, arguing that exit polls have accepted orders to present the match as ambiguous, regardless of the outcome. In addition, he accused Moldova of contributing to electoral fraud, facilitating more Moldovan citizens to vote as expatriates.

The first indications for the result are expected with exit polls at 9 pm (local time), in an election match that is expected to decisively shape Romania’s attitude towards the EU, Ukraine and Democratic Stability.

Right -wing candidate George Simon said his party, Aur, will be counting the votes across the country in order to – as he argued – to ensure the transparency of the electoral process. He also announced Whatsapp number, through which he calls on citizens to report incidents where they believe that the data of deceased relatives or friends have been used for electoral fraud, have been used.

Today’s electoral process is a repetition of last year’s elections, which have been canceled and caused a political storm in Romania. In December, the country’s constitutional court annulled the presidential election citing fears of foreign intervention, after the spectacular – and inexplicable for many – rise by supranationalist Galin Georgkescu in the first round. The decision was considered by many controversial, as many questions remain unanswered about exactly what happened.

Simon has described the cancellation as a “coup” and said Sunday, saying “the most important thing today is to return to democracy, popular vote and restore the faith of the Romanian people in the Republic.”
