The highest diplomat of the European Union Josep Borrell He said today that Iran and international forces are very close to an agreement on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, which will reduce Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of harsh sanctions.
The talks were close to an agreement until Russia made last-minute demands on the United States, insisting that sanctions imposed on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine should not affect its trade with Iran.
Borrell made the remarks during a speech today at the Doha Forum.
Enrique Mora, the EU’s co-ordinator for the talks, said on Friday that he would travel to Tehran today to meet with the head of Iran’s negotiating team.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabnolahian said this week that a nuclear deal could be reached soon if the United States took a realistic approach.
But U.S. officials were more cautious about trying to revive the deal.
