Germany was EU’s largest exporter to the US last year, sending 161 billion euros worth of goods ($ 183 billion)
The United States has a common interest in finding a quick solution to the conflict over trade duties, German Finance Minister Lars Clingbail said on Sunday.
After a period of declining, Trump rekindled the tensions on Friday, announcing 50% duties in goods from the European Union of 27 states, starting on June 1st.
Germany was the EU’s largest exporter to the US last year, sending € 161 billion ($ 183 billion), according to official data.
But Klingbail told the German public broadcaster Ard that the duties have jeopardized the US and German economy.
“We must not feel that they are causing us, but focus on what is at stake. We want a common solution with the US … and I want to say clearly here that this is also in the interest of the US“, He said in an interview.
“All US data on dollar and US bond levels show that they should also have an interest in working with us“, He added.
The White House suspended most of the duties that Trump announced in early April against almost every country in the world.
Trump left a 10% basic tax on most imports and later reduced 145% tax on Chinese products to 30%.
A 50% duty on EU imports would increase consumer prices in the United States, especially in German cars, medicines and machinery.
