NATO members need to be prepared for a possible attack by Russia over the next four years, said German Armed Forces leader General Karsten Broyer.

In his statements to the BBC, he said, among other things, that Russia produces 1,500 tanks each year, many of which could be used for an attack on NATO members in the Baltic by 2029 or earlier.

He insisted that NATO remains united in terms of war in Ukraine, despite the different views recently expressed by Hungary and Slovakia.

He described Russia’s threat as “very serious”, a threat that he said has never seen his 40 years of service before.

According to Article 5 of the NATO Articles of Association, any attack on a Member State would mean that other members would have to endorse it.

His comments come a few weeks before the NATO countries summit in The Hague, where they are expected to discuss, among other things, the increase in defense budgets.

Russia is strengthening its strengths to a great extent, he said.

“Not every chariot goes to the war in Ukraine, but it goes to stocks and new military structures that always face the West,” said.

Russia also produced in 2024 four million 152mm artillery missiles, which would not even go to Ukraine, he said.

There is, therefore, an intent and an accumulation of stocks for a possible future attack on NATO Member States in the Baltic, Broyer said.

“This is what analysts appreciate – in 2029. Therefore, we must be ready by 2029 … if you ask me now, is this a guarantee that it will not be earlier than 2029? I would say no, it’s not. Therefore, we must be able to fight tonight, “he said.
