Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited his Indian counterpart Narendra Monti to the G7 summit to be held this year in his country, despite diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The invitation was announced by Carney’s office after a telephone conversation between the two prime ministers.
Ottawa said the two leaders discussed the traditional close relations between Canada and India, such as deep social bonds and significant economic partnerships.
The G7 summit, the team of the seven most powerful western democracies, will take place in Cananakis, Canadian province of Alberta from June 15th to 17th. German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz and US President Donald Trump are expected to attend the work.
Monty then confirmed that he will attend the meetings in Alberta by writing on the X platform: “I am glad that Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney phoned me. He congratulated him for his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to go to G7. Prime Minister.
India is not a member of the G7 but can be invited as a guest on its annual meeting.
The background of the disagreement between Canada and India is the assassination of Sikh activist Hardipp Singh Nitzar in June 2023 in the Canadian province of British Colombia.
This case caused serious tension in bilateral relations. The then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trinto accused the Indian government of responsible for the targeted murder of Nitzar, a accusation that New Delhi rejected.
Nijar was a well -known supporter of an independent Sikh state in India. The Indian authorities have been looking for him for a long time and accused him of “terrorism”.
Otava has repeatedly accused New Delhi of orchestrating the murder in Vancouver in 2023 by Hardip Singh Nitzar, a 45 -year -old who had been a Canadian citizen who was fighting for the establishment of an independent Sikh state.
India rejected these accusations, describing them as “irrational”. The two countries had taken the mutual expulsion of their ambassadors and other high -ranking diplomats.
Canada has the largest Sikh community outside of India, which has about 800,000 members, as well as a large number of activists in favor of an independent Sikh state.
