Kyiv does not plan to open humanitarian corridors today to evacuate civilians from besieged cities because intelligence services warn of possible Russian “provocations” in those corridors, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verestsuk said today.
At the same time its mayor Mariupol stated that the city to its south Of Ukraine is on the verge of humanitarian catastrophe and must be completely evacuated.
Vadim Boichenko said about 160,000 civilians remained trapped in the city without electricity. Twenty-six buses are waiting to evacuate civilians, but Russian forces have not agreed to allow them safe passage, he added.
“The Russian Federation is playing with us,” he said. Russia denies targeting civilians and blames Ukraine for failing to agree on safe corridors for trapped civilians.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said today that Russian forces are regrouping, but can not move anywhere in Ukraine.
She added that Russian forces are trying to strengthen positions they already hold and break up Kiev’s defenses, but have no hope of occupying the capital.
“As of today, the enemy is regrouping its forces, but it can not advance anywhere in Ukraine,” Maliar told reporters, without giving details of the Russian troops’ movements.
