Brazilian far -right President Zaich Bolsonaru opposed the charges of attempted coup in his historical trial before the country’s Supreme Court.
When Judge Alexander de Moraes asked him if the facts he is accused of are true, Bolsonaru replied: “No, the indictment is not resistant.”
Bolsonaro’s deposition was the most long -awaited moment in this trial. The former president (2019-22) is in danger of a heavy sentence of prison if found guilty. Today, Moraes invited him to stand up to the judges and answer questions from the trial’s actors about the role he allegedly played in the conspiracy to remain in power despite his defeat in the presidential elections by Luis Inasio Lula Da Silva.
Two former close associates of Bolsonaros filed on Monday and three more earlier today.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the coup attempt, which even provided for the murder of Lula, did not succeed because the conspirators did not find supporters in the army leadership.
The former president and seven co -defendants, mainly former ministers and senior military, are at risk of even being sentenced to 40 years in prison.
“There is no reason to condemn me, I have a quiet conscience,” Bolsonaru himself said on Monday, on a break in the trial.
Judge Moraes, chaired by the trial, is considered “No. 1” enemy of the former president’s supporters.
Earlier, admiral Almir Garnier Santos testified, who, according to the indictment, had stated that his forces were “at the disposal of the president”, in a meeting where the coup d’etat were discussed. Santos denied all the charges, as did former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, who filed shortly afterwards. Police had found a draft decree in his home to cancel the election result, but he denied that he was involved in the drafting of this document. “He was scribbled, filled with spelling mistakes, I don’t know who asked for it,” he said.
General Augusto Heleno Rimpeiro, who was a close adviser to Bolsonaros and Minister for Constitutional Security, ignored Judge Moraes’ questions and responded only to those posed by his lawyer.
On Monday, the deposits started with Mauro Sid, a former Bolsonaru adviser who today is considered a “traitor” because he agreed to work with the authorities, hoping he would be treated favorable. According to Sid, Bolsonaru “received, read” and then “corrected” the document written by his associates and provided for the establishment of a “siege regime”, the “arrest of the authorities” and the establishment of a “election council” for the new election.
Mauro Sid’s deposition lasted almost four hours and in many places appeared hesitant or replied that he “remembers” when and where he heard Bolsonar’s coup d’etat. The latter’s lawyer, Celso Villardi, pointed out the “contradictions” of the witness, commenting that he had “selective memory”.
Bolsonaru, who has been deprived of his political rights by 2030, is a victim of a “political prosecution” with the aim of preventing him from claiming the presidency in the elections in 2026.
