Faced with a complex diplomatic dilemma is Donald Trump on the sidelines of Israeli bumps on Iran’s strategic goals, including facilities of the Islamic Republic of Nuclear and Rocket Program.
How does a president who pledged peace a rapid military escalation in the Middle East?
Hours after the attack, Trump seems to be struggling to find a steady tone.
US diplomats reacted restrained to the first reports of attacks, stressing that although the US had been notified in advance, they did not participate in the planning or implementation of the blows. Foreign Minister Marko Rubio said characteristically that the US “had no role” in the business.
On Friday morning, Trump himself posted on Truth Social a “bitter” warning to the Iranian leadership, which referred more to “telling you” rather than an organized strategy of declining.
“Some hard -core Iranians spoke bravely, but they didn’t know what was coming. Now they are all dead – and it will get worse! “
Shortly afterwards he added that the 60 -day deadline he had given to Tehran exhaled, but did not fail to comment on: “Maybe now they have a second chance!”
However, according to his statements to US media, it is understood that the “Trump line” is ambiguous.
In CNN he stressed that the US “of course” supports Israel “like never before”.
At ABC he described the attacks as “excellent step” warning that “followed and continuing” and stressing that they “hit them as hard as possible”.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, he went further, revealing that the US was aware of much more than a simple warning and described the business as “extremely successful”.
According to Daniel Bayman of Georgetown University, the Israeli attack suggests a new mood of Tel-Aviv to act independently of what US aspirations- which for a more conservative US government would be considered a challenge.
But in the case of Trump, “different rules apply” and, as Biman points out, the current president does not appear to be bound by his previous statements.
As Iran measures its wounds – over 90 dead, explosions in Tehran and extensive damage to Natanz’s nuclear complex – Israel mobilizes tens of thousands of soldiers, starting, as its authorities say, a fashionable military campaign.
Then, Peace looks more and more distant scenario.
The Trump strategy at present shows that the US is betting that military pressure will push Tehran into concessions.
This is a subtle balance: distancing from Israeli actions, but at the same time attempting to negotiate them.
However, even Trump himself realizes that main executives of the Iranian leadership have died, with Tehran now addressing the UN Security Council, denouncing the attack as a “act of war”.
“I think Netanyahu just torpedoed the nuclear negotiations,” commented Sina Azodi, an Associate Professor of Middle East at George Washington University, stressing that you can’t hit someone and then tell him ‘come in.’
Nevertheless, the US is planning to participate normally in scheduled talks with Iranian officials in Oman on Sunday.
Analyst Will Todman of Center for Strategic & International Studies notes that a possible US-Jran agreement would have a “dramatic impact” on Israel’s strategy, limiting Tel Aviv’s potential to hurt Iran’s nuclear and military program.
However, as they all show, reaching such an agreement is increasingly unlikely.
