Musum rains have claimed the lives of at least 18 people since Monday in Gujarat, the government of this northwestern Indian state announced today.
“Eighteen people died in rains associated and dozens of others living in low altitude areas were rescued“, The government said in a statement issued yesterday, Tuesday, in the evening.

Due to heavy rainfalls expected to continue in the coming days, Gujarat Prime Minister Boupendra Patel reviewed the measures taken by authorities.
The commissioner responsible for rescue operations in Gujarat, Allock Kumar Pandy, confirmed that the 18 people died, among other things, after being struck by lightning or trapped in collapsing buildings.
Floods and landslides are common in India during the monsoon period, which lasts from July to September. Scientists believe that climate change makes these phenomena more often, intense and unpredictable.
