Syrian transitional president Ahmad al -Sarah promised today that the persons involved in the “heinous” attack on a church in Damascus will be brought to justice, during which at least 25 people died on Sunday.

Syrian authorities have accused a member of the Islamic State jihadist organization of being the perpetrator of the suicide attack on the church of Prophet Elias in Damas’ district of Damascus.

“We are working nightly to arrest all those who participated or designed this heinous crime, and to lead them to justice to receive the penalty they deserve,” Sarah said.

The attack that was aimed at “innocents who were in security in sacred spaces reminds us of the importance of solidarity and unity – government and people – against anything that threatens the security and stability of our country,” he added.

This attack, condemned by many countries and the UN, is the first of its kind after the fall in December of President Bashar al -Assad, which was overthrown by a coalition of fascists Islamist rebels led by Sarah.

During about 14 years of civil war in Syria, churches were suffered by serious damage and attacks near Christian places of worship, but no suicide attack had been attacked in a church, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Security remains one of the biggest challenges for the Syrian authorities, called by the international community to protect minorities and include them in the political transition process.
