Abramovich case “riddle”: Poisoning or environmental factor?

by

Mystery continues to cover the circumstances under which Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich was allegedly poisoned.

A businessman’s spokesman confirmed yesterday that Abramovich was showing signs of poisoning after meeting with Ukrainian negotiators to discuss peace talks.

At this stage, however, no one can know who may be responsible, although, as the BBC notes, questions inevitably arise as to whether there is a Russian military service behind the incident.

The story was made known by a publication of the Wall Street Journal which reported that three people who took part in the negotiations in Kyiv had red eyes, constant and painful tears and peeling skin on their faces and hands.

Abramovich is estimated to be in good health, as the incident happened several weeks ago and he is expected to continue negotiations. The BBC notes that “those close to Abramovich say he has attended many meetings and works only for himself, after claiming that he was asked to help”.

Scenario for environmental factor
According to Reuters, a US official said on Monday that the information suggests that the illness of Abramovich and the Ukrainian peace negotiators is due to an environmental factor and not to poisoning.

The US official told Reuters: “The information indicates that it was environmental and not poisoning.”

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined to give further details.

The poison “was only enough to scare them”
According to the Bellingcat investigative journalism team, the victims of the poisoning had consumed only chocolate and water in the hours before the onset of symptoms.

It is noted that the toxic dose was not sufficient to kill the victims and “probably intended to scare them” instead of causing permanent damage.
