A ambassador from Afghanistan arrived in Russia today, for the first time after the Taliban returned to power in 2021, confirming Moscow’s approach with Kabul.
Anonymous sources told the Ria Novosti and Tass agency that Ambassador Gul Hasan arrived in the Russian capital and will soon take up his duties. The Embassy, which contacted the French Agency, said the diplomat was due to arrive in Moscow today, but did not confirm that he is already there.
The previous ambassador, Sain Tageb Jawad, who had been appointed before the Taliban took power, remained in that position until April 2022. He was then replaced by a header appointed by the Taliban.
In April this year, Moscow approved the appointment of the Taliban ambassador as part of the strengthening of the links between Russia and Afghanistan. It was preceded by the ruling of the Russian Supreme Court, which removed the Taliban from the list of “terrorist organizations”, a symbolic but important move.
The Taliban entered Kabul on August 15, 2021, after the collapse of the US -supported government. A few days later, the full departure of the US forces from Afghanistan followed. Since then, Russia has been promoting the normalization of its relations with the new government, which it considers a possible financial partner.
The Taliban has not been recognized as a legal government of Afghanistan at present by any country, mainly due to the violation of women’s rights.
In addition to Russia, Pakistan, China, Iran and most Central Asian countries have some diplomatic relations with the Taliban.
