Seven European Union countries on Monday called on their citizens not to join Ukrainian military resistance against the invading Russian troops.
The appeal was issued by the justice ministers of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg and Belgium.
The ministers of the seven countries “unanimously discouraged Europeans from joining” the ranks of volunteer fighters heading to the war in Ukraine, according to a statement issued after their meeting in Brussels.
After the invasion of Russian troops on February 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky openly called on foreigners to come to the aid of his country as part of an “International Legion” that would fight alongside the Ukrainians.
On March 6, Ukraine said about 20,000 people had responded to his call.
“It simply came to our notice then “People are traveling to a war zone,” said French Interior Minister Geral Darmanen after talks with his counterparts in Brussels.
“As far as I know, there have been very few departures from France that could be confirmed – almost none,” said Darmanen, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency.
