Russia became yesterday the first land on the planet to formally acknowledged the Taliban government in Afghanistan, who returned to power in 2021 after overthrowing the government backed by the West, committing “to continue an external friendship policy to Afghan”.
China today welcomed Russia’s decision.
“China as a neighboring country and traditionally Afghanistan’s girlfriend has always believed that Afghanistan should not be excluded from the international community,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning.
Although only Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates had recognized the previous Taliban government in Afghanistan (1996-2001), this time many other states, including China and Pakistan, have accepted the ambassadors of the government in their capital.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said yesterday: “We believe that the official recognition of the Islamic Emirates government of Afghanistan will boost the development of constructive bilateral cooperation between our countries in various areas.”
