Today, Thursday will be a vote on a motion of censure against European Commission President Ursula von der Layen in Strasbourg.
The initiative for the motion of censure was Romanian, a far -right MEP Georgue Popea who accuses von der Laien for a “lack of transparency” in the Pfizergate case.
The president of the Commission has never released the messages he had exchanged with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the Commission was negotiating the company’s vaccine market.
Many associations and persons opposed to the vaccines had appealed against the Commission on this issue, while the US newspaper New York Times called for without access to these messages.
Pipea also claims that Brussels “intervened” in the Romanian presidential election, won by pro -European candidate Nicusor Dan last May. The Romanian MEP generally accuses the Commission of “abuse of power” and of “ignoring the European Parliament”, arguing that decisions are taken by von der Laien.
Although Pipea is expected to supported by far -right MEPshis attempt to overturn her team von der Laienne looks in advance doomed. Even the political team to which it belongs, the ECR, has taken distances, as it is also involved by Italian MEPs of the George Melonian party who appear more different against von der Layen.
The People’s Party (EPP)the largest political group in the European Parliament, appears united around the presidentcoming from his ranks. His leader, Manfred Weber, spoke of “Putin’s puppets in the European Parliament” who “are trying to undermine European unity and overthrow the committee, at this time of global upheavals and the economic crisis”.
The Social Democrats and the Center They will also not vote for the motion of censure, although they criticize von der Layen and EPP for his “cooperation” with the ECR.
