The Russian president Vladimir Putin in a new statement stressed that the bombing of the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol will stop only when the Ukrainian troops surrender.
During a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday night, the Russian leader agreed to consider plans to evacuate civilians from the city, according to French officials.
Meanwhile new satellite images came to light showing the devastation caused by the bombings.
The images, published by Maxarshowed that residential areas have been reduced to rubble and stressed that Russian forces are in firing positions on the outskirts of the city.
French officials at the Palais des Champs-Elysées described the situation in the city as “catastrophic” and said that “civilians must be protected and must leave the city if they so wish.” “They need to have access to the food, water and medicine they need.”
Statistics released by Ukrainian officials on Sunday show a bleak picture of the outcome of the bombings and battles in Mariupol.
According to these data, 90% of the residential buildings in the city were damaged, of which 60% were immediately hit and 40% were destroyed.
Seven of the city’s hospitals – 90% of the city’s bed capacity – were damaged, while three of them were completely destroyed.
