German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz warned that US President Donald Trump’s threat of imposing 30% will hit the exporters of Germany, Europe’s largest economy, unless a negotiating solution is reached.

The European Union will extend the suspension of commercial countermeasures against the US by August 1, in order to be room for further consultations, following the threat of Trump for a 30% new tariff at the expense of the European bloc last weekend.

If the imposition of duties is finally proceeding, the German government may need to postpone part of its economic policy, Chancellor Friedrich Mertz said in an interview with the ARD public network on Sunday.

“This would overshadow everything and hit the German export industry at the core,” he warned.

Mertz stressed that he was in close coordination with other European leaders to prevent the implementation of such duties.

“This requires two things: Unity within the European Union and good lines of communication with the US president,” the conservative leader added.

Asked if Germany supports US countermeasures, Mertz replied: “Yes, but not before August 1st.”

Chancellor said he discussed the matter extensively over the weekend with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Laien, and had a telephone contact with Donald Trump on Friday.

“We want to take advantage of this period, these two and a half weeks until August 1, to find a solution. I’m really dedicated to it, “he said.
