The South Korea Ministry of Transport is preparing to order all airlines in the country, which have Boeing jetsto consider fuel switches According to a 2018 Directive of the US Federal Aviation Service (FAA), a ministry spokesman for foreign media said today.
The South Korean ministry official did not give a timetable for the checks. Boeing did not immediately respond to a request to comment.
The fuel switches lock was under consideration after the 2018 directive by FAA reported a preliminary investigation into Air India’s Boeing 787-8 airplane last month, which claimed the lives of 260 people.
FAA’s directive was recommended, but did not obligeto the holders of several Boeing models, including 787, to inspect fuel switches to ensure that they could not be accidentally pressed.
Reuters reported yesterday, citing a document and sources, that the aircraft manufacturing company and FAA had alerted airlines and regulators that the locking of fuel switches on Boeing planes is safe and no controls are required.
Air India’s preliminary survey states that the airline did not perform the checks proposed by FAA with the 2018 Directive, as the latter was not mandatory. But it is also stated that maintenance files show that the propulsion control system, which includes fuel switches, had been replaced in 2019 and 2023 on the crashed plane.
