Europe, in a period of geopolitical challenges, is looking for * stability * and unity. Despite the open fronts left by Brexit, European governments are investing in the practice of bilateral partnerships, with Berlin and London leading this time.

Coastal Agreement between Britain and Germany

The official Merz visit to the British capital is accompanied by the promotion of the most important British-German treaty after 1945. At the center of the new ‘Treaty of Friendship’which in British media is described as a “landmark agreement”, are set:

  • The *combating circuits of illegal trafficking of immigrants *, with a clear commitment of Berlin to tighten the law on traffickers by the end of the year
  • Strengthening *defense cooperation *and *military exports *, with common projects in the production of tanks, fighter jets (Typhoon) and precision rockets
  • The assurance of mutual support of the two countries to a possible external threat

As British Prime Minister Starmer said: “As the closest allies, we will continue to work together to comply with the priorities shared by the British and the Germans” *.

Emphasis on education, tourism and interface

Of particular importance is also given to the empowerment of * and * tourist * cooperation. After Brexit, up to 80% decreased in student exchanges between the two countries, which mainly affected the British side. For this reason, efforts are being made to restore and stimulate bilateral educational programs.

In the context of economic cooperation, Britain’s Minister of Transport Heidi Alexander announced that the creation of * London-Verolin’s direct railway line is being considered. As he characteristically stated: *”The financial perspective of a direct railway line is” huge “and will create new jobs, boost investment and strengthen trade connections” *. However, the venture remains complex as it requires the participation of other European countries, while the 1,000 -kilometer distance is a technical challenge.

Finally, shortly after the leaders’ meeting in Downing Street, Merz and Starmer will visit a factory in Hertfordshire, confirming the practical and symbolic character of the new era in the UK-Germany cooperation.
