The leader of South Ossetia, a de facto breakaway republic of Georgia, said today he was considering holding a regional reunification with Russia.
“We must, of course, seek the opinion of the people and make sure that the people express themselves on the possibility of union with the Russian Federation.”he said Anatoly Bibilov speaking on russian television. “It’s not difficult to do without delay. “As they say, the issue is technical,” he said, adding that reunification was an “old dream” of the Ossetian people.
South Ossetia and Abkhazia are the two regions of the Caucasus that seceded from Georgia. Russia recognized their independence in August 2008, following a lightning war with Georgia. Since then, Russian forces have been stationed permanently in both areas.
Last week, Bibilov announced that he had sent troops from South Ossetia to Ukraine “to help protect Russia.”
On Sunday, Luhansk separatist leader Leonid Pasetnik said a referendum on the region’s union with Russia would be held “in the near future.” Donetsk separatist leader Dennis Pushilin often speaks of a union with Moscow.
