At least 19 people were killed when a Bangladeshi Air Force training crashed in a school complex in northern Dhaka on Monday, according to the army and a firefighter.

More than 50 people, including children and adults, were hospitalized with burns, a doctor told reporters at the National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery.

The aircraft crashed into the complex of Milestone School and College, in the Uttara district of Dhaka, where children were. Television shots showed flames and tobacco coming out of the scene of the crash, as reported by the Associated Press.

Video from the scene of the crash showed a big fire near a lawn and a dense cloud of tobacco in the sky.

The Bangladeshi Army Press Office confirmed in a brief statement that the crashed F-7 BGI aircraft belonged to the Air Force.

Muhammad Juno, head of the Bangladeshi Provisional Government, said that “necessary measures” would be taken to investigate the causes of the accident and “ensure any kind of help”.

“The loss suffered by the Air Force … students, parents, teachers and staff, and others in this accident are irreparable,” he said.
