The United States and the European Union launched what they called a strategic dialogue on Russia on Wednesday, against the backdrop of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24.
The two sides held the first round of the “US-EU High Level Dialogue on Russia” on Wednesday, according to a joint press release from the US State Department and the European External Action Service. The US side was represented by Victoria Nuland, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, while the European side was represented by Enrique Mora, EEAS Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs.
The meeting focused on “strategic goals and policy coordination aimed at ending Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine,” according to the press release.
Both sides condemned what they called the “unprovoked, unjustified and barbaric war of the Kremlin against Ukraine.” They demanded an immediate end to the Russian army’s attacks on civilians.
Ms Nuland and Mr Mora praised US and EU co-ordination in imposing sanctions and export controls.
They also discussed taking additional measures to isolate Russia from the US and European economies and the international financial system, and imposing heavy costs on Moscow for their actions, according to a statement from the US State Department and European diplomacy.
The two diplomats also stressed their common position that it is important for China to support an immediate end to the armed conflict, the organization of humanitarian corridors and the prevention of any further escalation.
They also stressed that they would continue to “urge China not to circumvent or undermine sanctions against Russia, and not to provide any form of support for Russia’s attack on Ukraine,” according to a statement from the State Department and the EEAS.
