The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) today announced the arrest of a corruption official to fight corruption as a suspect for espionage on behalf of Moscow, and raided its offices.

According to SBU, the National Bureau official for the fight against corruption (NABU) “worked in the organization’s most selective and secret unit”, the “D-2”, and “spying on Russian special services”.

Ukrainian intelligence services have not revealed his identity. In a statement, they said that they had also conducted extensive investigations within the government organization and the prosecution specializing in the fight against corruption.

Nabu has announced that it is conducting “internal survey” and “examines the legality of the measures taken, including the use of violence against an employee”, without giving further details.

A video posted by SBU shows armed men in camouflage uniforms pulling the suspect out of a car, pushing him to the ground and handcuffed him. He faces a prison sentence of up to 15 years.

NABU, created after the 2014 Maidan revolution that brought to power in Kiev supporters of the West, is responsible for the fight against corruption, an endemic problem in Ukraine, which is an obstacle to its ambitions to join the EU.
