Firefighters fought fires in nearly 100 locations throughout Bulgaria On Sunday, with burnt houses and evacuation of residents, according to local media.

In particular, according to Reuters, a fire at the foot of Mount Pirin in southwestern Bulgaria spread to thousands of hectares of forest.

Another fire in Simitli destroyed many houses as it spread to Malesvo Mountain.

More than 200 firefighters who were sent to the area on Saturday retired due to strong winds that endangered their lives, authorities said, adding that they were expecting air support from other EU countries.

In Western Bulgaria, a fire that broke out on Saturday and spread quickly beyond the border in Serbia on Sunday along the Miloslavska Mountains, it almost completely burned down the village of Rani Loug, according to Nova television.

“It’s a ruthless tragedy,” said emergency volunteer Zvezdelin Vlaykov, as huge clouds of tobacco were rising over the hills. “In all the years I have been dealing with firefighting, I have never seen anything like that before.”

Authorities reported that three villages were evacuated and that the fire caused significant damage. In a statement, the interior ministry described the situation in Bulgaria as “dynamic and serious”.

On Sunday afternoon, a large fire broke out in the village of Kozarevo in the southeastern province of Yambol, destroying several houses, according to BNR.

Southeast European countries have experienced a record of temperatures last week, with many of them being in an area where scientists call a “focus of fire”.
