Following the announcement on Thursday of French President Emmanuel Macron that Paris will officially recognize a Palestinian state in September, dozens of ministers from countries around the world – including Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa – of a Palestinian.
The conference has been convened by the UN General Assembly and is co -chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.
But this solution is boycotted by the US and Israel
For many decades, most of the international community has supported the beginning of the solution of the two states, an Israeli and a Palestinian. According to an AFP count, at least 142 of the 193 UN member states – including France now recognize the Palestinian state.
But after 21 months of war in Gaza, the expansion of Jewish settlements to the occupied West Bank and the threats of Israeli officials that this area will be annexed to Israel, there are increasing concerns that it will be impossible to create a Palestinian state.
The conference takes place at a time “when the prospect of the existence of the Palestinian state is threatened more than ever, but is more than ever necessary,” commented French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Baros.
According to an interview with La Tribune Dimanche on Sunday, and other European countries will confirm “their intention to recognize the Palestinian state” during the conference, but without specifying what they are.
“We will call for New York so that other countries can follow us and create an even more ambitious momentum that will culminate on September 21,” at the UN General Assembly, Baros said.
However, British Prime Minister Kir Starmer reiterated on Friday that the recognition of a Palestinian state “should be part of a more comprehensive plan”, while Germany is not considering taking this step “in the short term”.
In addition to this issue, the Conference will focus on three axes: reforms in the governance of the Palestinian Authority, the disarmament of Hamas and its exclusion from the Palestinian governance and finally the normalization of relations between Israel and the Arab countries.
This week no announcements by the Arab countries are expected to normalize their relations with Israel, but “for the first time the Arab countries will condemn Hamas and seek its disarmament,” Baros noted.
The conference “offers a unique opportunity to turn international law and international consensus into a realistic plan and to prove the determination to end the possession and the conflict,” the Palestinian ambassador to UN Riyad.
Israel and the US will not participate in the conference, which was originally scheduled to take place in June, but was postponed due to the war between Israel and Iran.
